Officials hope next year will be the year to get ready to repair the 103 year old Sutherland Bridge, a project that has been planned for more than 30 years.State officials told County Road Superintendent Carla O’Dell that the bridge could move to the top of state list in 2019, O’Dell said Tuesday at the annual one and six year road plan meeting with the county commissioners.Replacing the bridge is expected to cost around $3 million, mostly paid with federal transportation funds that are administered by the Nebraska Department of Roads.O’Dell added that “we’re kind of at their (the NDOR’s) mercy.”O told the Bulletin later that if the bridge moves to the top of the state list, money would be available in 2022 reiterating something she said a year ago. Other listed projects rose to the top.North Platte businessman Eric Seacrest spoke to the commissioners, stressing the need to build a new bridge.Seacrest said the old one lane bridge has obsolete weight and width limits.Landowner Mike Kelly has said farmers have to drive 20 miles out of their way to get from one side of the North Platte River to the other. Kelly’s son farms and ranches just north of the bridge.”The bridge was built for Model Ts and horses and buggies,” Kelly said in 2017 at the roads meeting.Kelly noted that the bridge serves about 200,000 acres in western Lincoln County and McPherson County, and it’s not just farmers and ranchers who use the bridge.
